How to Thread a Sewing Machine

How to Thread a Sewing Machine
There’s nothing more frustrating than, drooling over a new sewing machine, taking the plunge and buying it, and then not being able to figure out how to use the silly thing! Ok, so you’ve got your brand spanking new sewing machine and you’re finally ready to take her out for a test drive. But wait, how do you thread this thing?! If you’re having trouble figuring out how to thread a sewing machine, don’t worry you’re not alone. Fortunately, these easy tips will get you up and sewing in minutes.
Step One
Use the lever on the side or back of your sewing machine to lower the foot pedal. Even this little step gives you just a little more room to see the eye of the needle.
Step Two
Raise the needle so that it’s in the highest position. This will also make threading the needle a little easier. Now depending on the type of sewing machine you have, you might turn the balance wheel on the side of the machine, or it might be automated. It helps to have your needle at the highest position viewpoint.
Step Three
After placing the spool of thread on the top spool pin, gently located the loose end of the thread. This should typically start at the top of the spool and have a small piece of thread just under the top label or pulled into a side notch.
Step Four
Pull the thread from the spool and follow your model-specific sewing machine directions to wind the thread through the designated spots. Depending on your model these could be numbered or have a little arrow or diagram on the sewing machine showing you which way to pull the thread.
Step Five
Once you’ve followed the thread guides on your machine you should now be at the bottom of the machine towards the actual needle.
Step Six
Now it’s your choice to either use your automatic needle threader or use the age-old method of moistening the end of the thread and easing it into the needle hole. Make sure to pull the thread back about four inches or so from the needle.
Step Seven
Pull the bobbin thread to match the distance of the needle and that’s it!
